IN a long, hot summer like this one, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun but it might surprise you to learn that there’s one more thing that needs protecting in intense heat – your phone.

Extreme temperatures can permanently damage technology like iPhones, Androids, laptops, and tablets, but there are ways to keep your gadgets safe.

It’s useful to take steps to keep your devices cool before it becomes dangerous, and Apple products help by issuing a warning when your device gets overheated.

The operating system’s message reads: “To resume use of your device as quickly as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment (away from direct sunlight) and allow it to cool down.”

Tech experts at Uswitch have shared tips for keeping your items working as best as they can by avoiding overheating.

In order to keep your phone from overheating, it should stay out of direct sunlight. Keep in the shade, or tuck your device under something else.

Mobile experts warn specifically about leaving your device in a hot car.

“Leaving one of your gadgets in a car is another surefire way to get it seriously overheated,” Uswitch warns.

“So make sure you take them with you when you’ve parked up.”

It’s also important that you put your phone on low battery mode – or even airplane mode – to work against overheating. This will help to not drain the resources by using too many settings.

Getting rid of the case on your phone can help prevent it from overheating, and so can keeping it out of your pocket or close to your body. Keeping it in your bag or out in the open air is a better plan.

If you want to cool down your gadget as quickly as possible, do not put it in the fridge or freezer – even if it seems like a good plan. The condensation could build up in the handset and damage it even more.

Instead, cool your technology down by placing it in front of a fan or in a dark, cool spot.
