Twitter was quick to jump on the news that Queen Elizabeth was COVID-positive and what this could mean for the future of the crown. Although Buckingham Palace’s statement noted that the 95-year-old monarch was only experiencing mild symptoms and seemed likely to recover, that didn’t stop people from speculating about what Charles and Camilla were thinking.
“I bet Camilla’s spending the day trying crowns on,” one person tweeted. “… the way the three main players got Covid after that ‘Queen Consort Camilla’ announcement…” another person commented, referring to the news that Charles’ wife would indeed take on the title upon ascending the throne.
Meanwhile, Twitter was buzzing that Charles might actually be happy about the diagnosis, with one person tweeting this cringeworthy comment: “Prince Charles catching COVID so he could give it to his mother and finally get his crown #Queen #QueenElizabeth.” Someone else had a different take, tweeting, “Imagine giving your mum COVID. Quite frankly, this should disqualify Prince Charles from the throne.”
Finally, in another display of Twitter behaving badly, someone said, “Prince Charles is currently gazing at the crown jewels and rubbing his hands together like a Disney villain saying ‘mine it shall soon be mine!'”
