Novak Djokovic hasn’t had the best of the starts to the 2022 season. The 20-times Grand Slam champion endured controversies and poor form to start the year. However, a champion that he is, Djokovic is back to his best. Yesterday, he had a commanding victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Italian Open title. It was Djokovic’s first title this year and couldn’t have come at a better time, with the French Open looming later this month.

It was the Serb’s sixth Italian Open title. Additionally, this tournament has become one of his most successful tournaments after the Australian Open. However, the Italian Open win was not the only delightful news for Djokovic. His seven-year-old son, Stefan, emulated his father with an incredible feat.

Novak Djokovic thrilled after his son’s victory

As the 34-year-old prevailed in Italy, his seven-year-old son, Stefan, was busy playing in a club tournament. Stefan went on to win the tournament and received huge praise from his father.

Subsequently, lauding his son for his efforts, Djokovic said, “Well, the journey as tennis parent started successful. My son won the tournament today. A sunshine double today. It’s a very small club tournament. Obviously it doesn’t really matter. The result is secondary. It was nice to see him playing.” 

It was a double-delight for the Djokovic family, as the father-son duo replicated each other by winning the tournaments. The 34-year-old has been in good form of late, after making it to the finals of the Serbia Open. Subsequently, he reached the Madrid Open semifinals before his title-winning run in Rome.

Djokovic slams Wimbledon’s ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes

Earlier this year, Wimbledon took a major decision to bar the players of the two nations from competing in this year’s tournament. However, Djokovic criticized this ruling, saying, “I will always condemn war, I will never support war being myself a child of war. I know how much emotional trauma it leaves. In Serbia we all know what happened in 1999. In the Balkans we have had many wars in recent history. However, I cannot support the decision of Wimbledon, I think it is crazy.”

Nonetheless, Djokovic will be full of confidence going into the French Open. The clay-court Grand Slam tournament commences on 22nd May.
