Love him or hate him, Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan is one of the greatest NBA stars ever. While most people around the world loved and supported him for his skills and competitiveness, His Airness also had his detractors for certain off-the-court practices.

MJ was known for his gambling addiction. In fact, he was involved in a lot of gambling controversies in the 90s. Once, he was spotted in a casino before a crucial Eastern Conference Finals game!

Moreover, there are many theories that claim Jordan’s first retirement was actually a suspension. The reason behind this suspension? Jordan’s gambling addiction.

Back in 1992, MJ was called to the court during a case concerning notorious gambler James ‘Slim’ Bouler. Officials found a check amounting to $57,000 in possession of Bouler that was issued by Michael Jordan.

Amidst all the drama, Jordan received support from one of his closest friends back then who is now not on good terms with the six-time NBA champion.

NBA Hall of Famer supported Michael Jordan amidst controversy

Charles Barkley and Jordan were the best of friends during their time in the league. This is evident when Barkley strongly supported MJ and bashed the officials for treating the Bulls’ star ‘unfairly’.

Chuck said, “Michael Jordan was treated unfairly. What Michael Jordan does with his money is his business. I think the NBA was totally wrong. He can do whatever he wants to do with his money.

Barkley made these statements when MJ was facing a lot of backlash for being involved in gambling activities. Apart from the Bouler controversy, Jordan was also part of a $900,000 golf betting scandal. In his book, businessman Richard Equinas claimed that he had won the amount from Jordan in golf bets.

Whether Jordan retired voluntarily or the association suspended him, is something that is not known to the public. After his initial retirement before the 1993-94 season, he returned to the league to reclaim the throne of basketball. Along with stars like Scottie Pippen and others, MJ won another three-peat in 1996, 1997, and 1998.
