It was the Wimbledon Championships in 2018. Serena Williams had made a comeback earlier that year after giving birth to her daughter, Olympia. The grass-court Grand Slam tournament that year coincided with the then United States President, Donald Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom. However, American tennis stars, Serena and John Isner had contrasting reactions to his potential visit to Wimbledon.

What did Serena Williams and John Isner say about Trump’s potential visit to Wimbledon?

During an interview at the tournament, the two players were asked about their reactions to Trump’s visit to Wimbledon during their matches. Talking about this, Serena said, “I don’t know what comments he’s made about women in sport. But I feel like he has the right to do whatever he wants to do. If he wants to come to a Wimbledon final, he has that right. I hope I’ll be there. I don’t know, I still have a lot of matches to win. For me, I can’t even think that far. I’m just thinking one at a time.”

On the other hand, John Isner said, “Oh yeah? Nice. Certainly. I’d love to have Trump come watch me. That would be awesome. Maybe I’ll tweet at him if I win on Wednesday. I know a lot of people won’t like that, but I don’t care.”

Serena managed to dig deep at Wimbledon that year. She reached the final before losing out to Angelique Kerber in the summit clash. Meanwhile, Isner reached the semifinal, where he lost to Kevin Anderson in a five-setter thriller.

Serena bows out of the National Bank Open

The American legend’s campaign in Toronto came to an end as she lost out to Belinda Bencic in the second round of the National Bank Open. It was Serena’s last match in Canada as she announced her retirement after the US Open later this month. After the match, she got emotional during the post-match interview.
