A furious Cesar Azpilicueta was involved in an ugly confrontation with a Chelsea supporter following their shock 4-2 defeat at home to Arsenal.

The Spain international endured mixed fortunes at Stamford Bridge, scoring the Blues’ second to draw the game level at 2-2 before conceding a stoppage-time penalty which Bukayo Saka converted.

And after referee Jon Moss blew the full-time whistle, the 32-year-old defender appeared to clash with a home fan and seemed to take umbrage at something he had said.

Initially, Azpilicueta put his arms out as the fan made gestures in his direction, seeming to imply Chelsea should have shown more fight.

Despite pointing at the fan and gesturing towards him, the club captain appeared to be walking away from the situation, but then changed direction to confront the fan.

Azpilicueta then appeared to berate the supporter for appearing to applaud sarcastically in his direction, with the fan then reacting by continuing the argument with the Spaniard.

However, the fan then appeared to give in and subsequently held his hands up in apology followed by a thumbs up to the defender.

Meanwhile, fellow Chelsea fans in the section of Stamford Bridge had gathered around the arguing pair and seemed to offer their thanks and support to Azpilicueta.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel however insists he could see both sides of the argument, saying: ‘I was not part of it. I saw it but honestly I can also understand the fan.’

But it did not make the pain of conceding four goals at home for the second Premier League game straight any easier to swallow.

However, the German argued the pitch was partly to blame for the defeat and played a role in Eddie Nketiah’s first goal following Andreas Christensen’s underhit back pass.

‘It is a very difficult pitch we have here,’ Tuchel said. ‘It’s not to our favor. The ball bounces very awkwardly in front of Andreas… We had the same mistake against Real Madrid.’
