Coco Gauff is slowly climbing into the position of the best next-generation player. At first, she took the spot of the youngest player in the WTA top 100. Then, in the recent Grand Slam of clay, she made it to the finals. The 2022 French Open, which took down high-caliber players like Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep in the first week, couldn’t stop the young blood from Atlanta, Georgia.
Now she is pumped up to make a noteworthy run at the Wimbledon Championships this year. Her energy was clearly visible in her game, as in the very first week, she has secured an impressive record.
Coco Gauff is in London to make her mark
Gauff locked horns with the Romanian tennis ace Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. While playing against the 34 year former World No. 20, she smashed a powerful return which was registered as WTA’s fastest serve in the ladies’ draw of this season’s grass major.

The American produced a serve, clocking 124 miles per hour at Centre Court. Later, the 18-year-old defeated Buzarnescu in straight sets of 6-2, 6-3 to enter the third round.
In addition, Gauff has teamed up with fellow American tennis ace Jack Sock to compete for the mixed doubles trophy in London. The pair will test its efficiency and coordination against the British duo Kyle Edmund and Olivia Nicholls on Saturday, 2nd July.
Potential threat to Gauff’s run
With the seven times Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams, out of the tournament, there are probably only three threats to Coco Gauff’s run. First being the World No.1 Iga Swiatek. The Pole snatched Gauff’s first Grand Slam title out of her hands a few weeks ago in France. Alos, she is currently on a record-breaking winning streak of 37 match wins.
Following her, there is Ons Jabeur, the Tunisian tennis star and WTA No.2. Jabeur recently claimed her career-high ranking by winning the WTA 500 event in Berlin. But what’s more important is that she defeated Gauff in the semifinals to do so. Therefore, it won’t be wrong to say that the Tunisian has an upper hand when it comes to playing against the American on grass.

The last one is Simona Halep. Although Halep suffered a recent injury, she looks well settled on the greens of London. The 2019 Wimbledon champion has taken down her first two opponents in straight sets and is performing really well under the guidance of Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.
