‘Don’t Feel Anything Right Now’ – Rafael Nadal Reveals the State of His Condition After Treatment in Barcelona

Rafael Nadal, the Spanish tennis ace, is one of the greatest players of this generation. Nadal alongside Federer and Djokovic have been three of the best players to step onto a tennis court.

However, his career isn’t all about success, as he has suffered his fair share of hardships. Nadal has been struggling with a persistent foot issue since almost the start of his career. The Spaniard recently opened up about the severity of the injury. After embracing his 22nd Grand Slam title in France, Nadal spoke about the injury and his plans of pursuing medical treatment for the same.

The World No.5 started the treatment in Barcelona after winning his 14th French Open title on 5th June. He recently gave an update about the condition of his foot. Nadal said, “We will know in a few days. I don’t feel anything right now.” However, it is still unclear if he requires more medical help or the initial treatment will be enough.

Nadal’s foot injury is a rare degenerative condition known as the Mueller-Weiss syndrome. The syndrome causes spontaneous osteonecrosis in the navicular bone, which is located in the mid-foot region. Thus causing pain and deformity in the mid-foot and hind-foot regions.

Further, the 22-time Grand Slam champion suffered major backlash because of an early exit from the Italian Open caused by the resurfacing of the injury. Even rumors of his retirement caught fire after his struggles in Italy. However, Nadal has silenced such rumors by winning the tournament in Paris.

Nadal’s French Open journey

Nadal, after facing a fourth round exit in Rome, made a strong comeback in the French Open. Apart from his skills, his endurance also took center stage in this tournament. The former World No.1 took down his first two opponents in straight sets and then locked horns with the World No.9, Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The 21-year-old managed to extend the match up to the fifth set. However, Nadal’s experience outdid his energy. Thereafter, the 36-year-old met his arch-rival and the defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals, triumphing in four sets.

In the semifinals, Alexander Zverev the World No.3 stood against the Spaniard. Unfortunately, Zverev’s run in the tournament ended after a horrific ankle injury. Thereafter, Nadal took an easy straight sets win over the Norwegian young blood, Casper Ruud in the finals to clinch the title.
