The level of high-intensity workouts that athletes go through is astonishing. Training for a race that lasts 10 seconds, it is startling to see the work that goes into the process. It’s impressive how Usain Bolt went about his business for nearly two decades without losing stride. As people love challenges, YouTuber Laurie Shaw undertook the challenge of becoming a world-class sprinter like the Jamaican sprinter.

On his first attempt, he set 13.94 seconds in the 100-meters. Vowing to get it under 13 seconds in 30 days, Shaw took up the monumental challenge. But, it’s not a straightforward task. Under the tutelage of former world champion sprinter David Isackson, he was ready to go all in. The results were spellbinding.

Admitting to being “a bit of a beginner when it comes to sprinting,” Shaw brought in Isackson to assist him through the course of workouts. He divided the training into two parts. The first month aimed at building leg strength and had drills like hill sprints. As the name suggests, it was daunting, and Shaw labeled it “death sprints.” They focused these sprints on helping an athlete to have an explosive start off the blocks. Running steep hills helps create a perfect body position for the athlete during sprinting events.

Correcting techniques day by day, he learned about the various procedures followed by a high-level sprinter. Shaw embraced the hard work and knew the obstacles that world-class sprinters had to undergo to reduce the time on the stopwatch. “One thing I’ve come to appreciate is just how impressive a sport sprinting is. What fascinates me is the amount of work and more specifically hours of training top sprinters have to put in to shave off literal milliseconds from their time,” mentioned Shaw.

Significantly, he pointed out how Bolt trained for 20 years and could run just 115 seconds in his Olympic career. Thus, hard work often goes unnoticed in the world of sprinting.

Achieving your end goal

After the first two weeks, he puts all the learning into practice while sprinting at high speed. Shaw saw radical changes. He brought his original time of 13.94 to 13.23. One could see the difference of going in full steam for 30 days. Soon after, Shaw wore sprint spikes and ran 12.96 seconds to finish the month. Sprint spikes provide extra grip to the forefoot, and one can transfer more force forward while improving their stride turnover.

The Olympic Games happen once in four years, and we can understand the outburst of emotions after winning the race. With all the motivation in place, are you ready to take up the sprinter challenge?
