Manchester United just had one of the worst seasons in their entire history as a club. The arrival of superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane gave fans a lot of hope for next season, but instead, it all went down in flames, quite quickly in fact.

After the end of the season, United appointed former Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag as their new coach and the Dutch manager has the responsibility to take the club forward next season. However, he does need some reinforcements, and United are looking for players in the transfer market.

They managed to sign former Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia, who became the first signing of the Ten Hag era.

Joan Laporta talks about Frenkie de Jong

Both Ten Hag and Man United have a very clear idea about who they want to sign next. United have been linked with a move for FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong for a long time, and have reportedly agreed on a €65 million deal with add-ons rising to €20 million.

However, the move hasn’t progressed at pace, and FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta came out in an interview to give his thoughts on the Dutchman. Laporta revealed that the club doesn’t want to let De Jong go even though other clubs have tabled offers for him.

Frenkie is a Barcelona player and, save there was the need to let him go, he is not available. We do not want to sell him. There are offers for him and if at any moment it was in our interests, we could do a deal, but that is not the case. We don’t want to sell him,” Laporta said.

De Jong and his links with Erik Ten Hag

However, despite all of Laporta’s claims, a deal between the two clubs is indeed close. Frenkie de Jong had played under Erik Ten Hag at Ajax, and became one of the best midfielders in the world there.

It’ll be interesting to see if Man United can manage to pull this signing off as they desperately need a world-class midfielder like de Jong in their team.
