Scotland midfielder Gilmour endured another forgettable afternoon alongside his toiling teammates as the relegation-haunted visitors conceded three times in the first 42 minutes at Selhurst Park.
Frustrated fans were caught on camera telling the 20-year-old to ‘f*ck off back to Chelsea’ in a chant directed at the prodigy from the away end.
Billy Gilmour and loan club Norwich suffered a 3-0 loss at Crystal Palace in the Premier league
Hot prospect Gilmour has been almost ever-present since new boss Dean Smith was appointed on November 15, playing all but 13 minutes of their eight Premier League games since then.
That run began brightly with a precious 2-1 win at home to Southampton in Smith’s first match in charge, only to give way to a dire run of form that has yielded just two points from their last seven games.
Despite having Gilmour’s creativity within their ranks, Norwich have not scored since Teemu Pukki rescued a point in a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Newcastle on November 30.
Norwich are now three points behind fourth-bottom Watford with a vastly inferior goal difference.
Visiting fans were seen telling Gilmour in no uncertain terms to return to his parent club
The Hornets have two games in hand on Smith’s side, while third-bottom Burnley have four more games than them to play.
Gilmour endured criticism for his ball retention as Palace ran riot in the first half, Odsonne Edouard opening the scoring from the spot with eight minutes gone before Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jeffrey Schlupp compounded Norwich’s misery.
One fan described Gilmour as ‘absolute pony’ and said: ‘I never want to see Billy Gilmour don the NCFC shirt ever again.
‘Was so excited for him when he joined but he’s been one of the most underwhelming and disappointing signings I can remember.’
One Norwich fan said they would be happy not to see Gilmour turn out for the strugglers again
Others suggested that the 20-year-old Scotland newcomer requires time to become stronger
Another viewer suggested: ‘Billy Gilmour needs to come back off his loan at Norwich to Chelsea and go into the Championship.
‘Sadly, he’s not quite ready for the Premier League yet – he’s not strong enough. Physically, he loses so many battles in the midfield due to that aspect of his game. It really hasn’t worked.’
The Champions League winner was defended by some Chelsea fans. One said of his Carrow Road critics: ‘What clowns – he’s their best player and it isn’t even close.
‘Would gladly bring Billy back. What a talent he is and what a career he will have.’
Some Chelsea fans backed prospect Gilmour and pointed to his success with the high fliers
Gilmour has impressed Blues supporters and was on the bench in the Champions League final
The promising midfielder is not expected to return to Stamford Bridge prematurely in January
Chelsea are understood not to have the right to recall Gilmour in January because he has played enough games to prevent a recall clause in his season-long deal being activated.
Smith revealed that Gilmour played 90 minutes with a high temperature in the 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on December 14.
The former Villa chief warned afterwards: ‘We are in a dangerous situation now where we are risking the health and welfare of the players.
‘Against Villa we had a player playing 90 minutes with a temperature of 38.4 degrees, which is not right.’
Norwich are next in action when they travel to Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday.
