Watching your favorite sport on the weekend can just be the distraction you need after a long week. The icing on the cake is that Formula 1 operates exactly throughout a weekend for a large part of the calendar year. Everyone gets so in tune with the racing action that before they know it, they are hooked to it.

The pinnacle of motorsport sets in action week in and week out. Yet, sports fanatics always want a deeper dive into the behind-the-scenes action. Everything from learning new details about your favorite driver to forming a connection with your sports idol.

The recent spurt in popularity has changed the way many perceive this sport. Both F1 and the constructors have invested in promoting content on social media. In a recent clip on the official F1 YouTube channel, they presented the drivers with a new challenge.

In the 3rd episode of the series, ‘Grill the Grid’, the drivers ranked each on the basis of laps completed in 2021. The starting round featured a comparison between the experienced campaigner, Sebastian Vettel, and the rookie, Yuki Tsunoda.

Right off the block, the drivers loved the Vettel poster that the F1 marketing team selected. The French drivers, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly were quick to acclaim “Nice Picture” and “He seems happy, so I’ll say more”, respectively. It was then followed up by a cheeky reaction from George Russell.

The Brit immediately chuckled after seeing the image and followed it up with a dig at the German. He said “So I think he needs a shave there, to be honest, I’ve never seen Seb so wild”

Later, Russell ranked Tsunoda above Vettel based on the laps completed last season. However, it was the wrong answer, and he disappointedly added “Oh well, that’s a shame, okay”.

George Russell walks in the steps of Sebastian Vettel

The Mercedes driver and the Aston Martin driver are on opposite ends of their career. Sebastian Vettel debuted in F1 in 2007 and it is his 15th year on the grid. On the other hand, Russell debuted in 2019 and it is his 4th year on the grid.

Naturally, on track, they are both rivals representing two different constructors. Yet, they both share the same title in the F1 paddock. The two F1 drivers are the directors of the Grand Prix Drivers Association.

The Grand Prix Drivers Association is a trade union of all the drivers on the grid to discuss any concerns related to the racing action. The four-time world champion has been an active director of this association since 2010. In 2021, Russell replaced Romain Grosjean as the director as the former Haas driver parted ways from the sport.

Russell shared his experience of representing the drivers by saying, “There’s always conversations ongoing and just trying to improve the sport. Also, in conversations with Formula 1, trying to improve circuit safety, design, whatever it may be. think it’s just something a little bit different and I enjoyed it.”
