Recently, Trackhouse Racing team owner Justin Marks spoke about his ambitious Project 91. The scheme got off to a flying start with its first candidate, who is making his debut later this year. That person is none other than the 2007 Formula One world champion, Kimi Raikkonen. Earlier at Mid-Ohio, Marks talked about the future of Project 91 and whether it is a stepping stone for a third charter.

He said, “I don’t think Project 91 necessarily is purposed to serve as a precursor to a third full-time team for Trackhouse. I just think it was an opportunity to create a piece of business within Trackhouse. It’s a brand extension of what we’re trying to do, do something out there that’s unique and different. It’s got a lot of value for partners and for Chevrolet in the sport. Bringing some world class people from other disciplines to Cup. This car allows us to do that. This year, it’s just about the one race at Watkins Glen. Next year, my hope is to run all the road courses. Expansion to a third full-time team is definitely in the conversation, but it’s not something that we’re going to push quickly. When that time comes it’s going to be because we’ve got a partner that wants it.

What to expect from Trackhouse Racing for the rest of the season?

For the current race weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Ross Chastain starts in 2nd place. This is because qualifying was rained out and the grid was decided by championship order. Meanwhile, teammate Daniel Suarez starts down in 7th, and he could be a contender.

The best news for Trackhouse Racing is that both drivers have qualified for the Playoffs. Chastain is clearly leading the charge, but Suarez managed to sneak in a win at the Sonoma Raceway. Now, both of them can duke it out in the Playoffs, provided we don’t cross the threshold of 16 winners in the regular season. Otherwise, Suarez will have to try and qualify on points.
