LeBron James and his time in the Miami Heat is nothing less than legendary. He joined the team from South Beach as a free agent after years of carrying a lackluster Cleveland Cavaliers team.
Interestingly enough, he could have continued playing for the Heat when his contract ran out in 2014. However, he refused to sign a new contract and returned to the Cavs for a second stint.
According to the latest reports, Pat Riley asked LeBron to sign with the team with less than a max contract. This wasn’t taken well by King James as he responded with silence as he was looking forward to a reunion with his former team.
Eminent journalist Marc Stein described this situation in detail and also compared James Harden‘s situation with the Philadelphia 76ers with that of LeBron.
Stein said, “That summer, Miami’s Pat Riley and noted Heat front-office strategist Andy Elisburg hosted James’ agent Rich Paul and longtime NBA agent and attorney Mark Termini, then the lead negotiator for Klutch Sports, for a meeting to discuss what the Heat could do roster-wise depending on various contract constructions.”
“James, to that point in his career, had stunningly never been a max player, which were the only terms Paul and Termini were prepared to accept“, said Stein.
How good was LeBron James in the Miami Heat?
One of the biggest decisions in LeBron’s life was joining the Miami Heat in 2010. Although he was one of the best players while playing for the Cavs, a lack of support from his teammates swayed King James away from a championship.
The Miami Heat already had a good roster before they signed James. After making the superstar signing of James from the free agency, the Heat formed a superteam consisting of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
James won 2 NBA titles with the team and he averaged 26.9 points, 6.7 assists, and 7.6 rebounds in 4 seasons with the Miami Heat.
