Bolton boss Ian Evatt launched an attack on the fans whose ‘barrage of abuse’, including an alleged racist insult, forced their League One game at Morecambe to be held up for 10 minutes.

Referee Ross Joyce dragged both teams off in the 88th minute of the 1-1 draw at the Mazuma Stadium and Evatt admitted he was fuming at the behaviour of the supporters behind their dugout.

‘From minute one the barrage of abuse from directly behind us was astonishing,’ he said.

‘Encroachment, spitting and it takes the worst of all remarks — a racist remark — for somebody to stand up and do something about it.

‘I’m emotional. This game never fails to disappoint me. If one of us gets abused, we all get abused. This needs to be stamped out.’

Morecambe have said they were aware of the allegations and will launch an investigation,

Meanwhile, Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga was racially abused on social media after his penalty shoot-out miss against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Friday night.

Elanga struck his spot-kick over the bar as United crashed out of the competition.

United team-mate Marcus Rashford, who was subjected to online racist abuse after missing a penalty in England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy last summer, was among those who offered support to Elanga, who was consoled by team-mates on the pitch after the match.
