Romanian tennis star Simona Halep, ever since turning pro, has been an inspiration and hope for her people back in Romania. The 30-year-old made a comeback to the WTA tour recently after a long injury break. With her new coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, she slowly regained her momentum and had a run to the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships 2022.

She recently appeared on the Behind the Racquet’ podcast, discussing her journey as a tennis player.

Discussing her journey as a professional tennis player, the 30-year-old recalled her first Grand Slam final appearance. Also, she explained its importance back in her country.

“In 2014, tennis changed my life. I played in my first Grand Slam final at the French Open. No one in Romania had reached a Grand Slam final since 1978. Emotions exploded and everyone had high hopes for my future. They started to believe I could win a Grand Slam,” she said.

Further, she spoke about her motivation and way of handling the immense expectations.

“I want to win matches and tournaments, but I have learned you do not have to put success first. The most important thing is hard work. If you give one hundred percent, you have no cause for regret. I have never been scared of failure. If you do not succeed, you were not good enough, so you must work harder,” she added.

Halep’s Wimbledon Championship 2022 campaign

Simona Halep had a wonderful run in the recently concluded Wimbledon Championships 2022. She made it to the semifinals of the event. Starting her campaign against Karolina Muchova, she claimed an easy two-set victory. Further, she defeated Kirsten Flipkens in the second and Magdalena Fręch in the third round of the tournament.

She defeated Paula Badosa to book her quarterfinal slot against Amanda Anisimova. In the quarterfinal, she looked dominant in approach and clinched a straight-set victory. With the way she was going, the Romanian looked set for yet another Wimbledon title. However, she lost to the eventual champion, Elena Rybakina in Semifinals.

Having discovered her form in London, she will hope for going all the way later in the US Open now look forward to a strong showing in Flushing Meadows.
