Even though Jimmy Garoppolo happens to be a proven passer in the league, there are many hurdles surrounding his trade talks. However, the former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Cris Collinsworth believes that the San Francisco 49ers will not try to trade him from the roster.

For the past few days, Garoppolo’s trade has been the talk of the town. In the wake of young quarterback Trey Lance set to take charge, it seems the former Super Bowl champion will have to settle for a backup role if he stays with the team.

Will Jimmy Garoppolo stay with the Niners?

While speaking on his popular podcast, Cris Collinsworth made some bold claims over Garoppolo’s future in the NFL. According to him, the Niners will not be ready to move on from the 30-year-old quarterback. With so much efficiency and experience, he thinks Garoppolo will continue to play the starter in the upcoming season. “Don’t count out Jimmy Garoppolo” Collinsworth tweeted, tagging the link of his recent episode.

Indeed, Garoppolo was always a first-choice starter for the Niners until he started suffering frequent injuries. He incurred a major shoulder injury while playing against the Dallas Cowboys last season. As a result, he underwent surgery on March 8, which could have taken place in the last week of January.

It is believed that he will be fully healed before the team’s minicamp by July. Moreover, he is also carrying a humongous salary cap of $26.95 million, which is another barrier to his trade.

Thus, no teams show interest to acquire him, citing his health issues and salary cap. However, releasing Garoppolo will help the franchise save a gaudy $25.550 million against the cap.

According to the reports, Carolina Panthers heading into the season with Sam Darnold and rookie Matt Corral are the front runners showing interest in the quarterback.

Similarly, the Seattle Seahawks are also on the list that overlooked many quarterbacks in the draft. One thing is for sure, the Niners won’t let their elite QB walk away bare hands to their rivals without anything significant in return. But Collinsworth is still optimistic about Garoppolo’s future with the Niners, despite having Lance on their roster.

Missing large portions of the 2018 and 2020 seasons and staying injured might be the potential reasons why Niners went after Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL draft. He was selected as 3rd overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers from that year’s draft.

The 22-year-old was granted a four-year rookie deal worth a $34.1 million fully guaranteed contract. Even though he was acquired for a backup role, today, Lance holds the ability to start the games for the Niners.

During his sophomore season, Lance completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards with 28 passing touchdowns and no interceptions through 16 games. He also added 1,100 rushing yards with 14 rushing touchdowns. In the absence of Garoppolo in 2021, he was successful in leading the team, gaining the confidence of coaches, and managing staff. In the coming days, it will be exciting to see how things will change inside the Niners locker room.
