Real Madrid tweeted their version of the famous Gary Lineker quote to celebrate the 3-1 victory over Chelsea: ‘Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and, in the end, Benzema always scores’.

After the Frenchman’s hat-trick gave Real Madrid the advantage going into the second leg, keeper Thibaut Courtois said: ‘Karim is the best in the world. I said it after the PSG game and we saw it again tonight’.

The Belgian keeper still feels there is work to do to knock out the current champions.

‘The job is not done. If you concede early in games everything can change,’ he said.

‘We still have to win the tie,’ he added.

We scored two then missed two but we were able to get the third. We wanted to have the ball.

‘We defended a bit too deep at times in the second half and Lukaku almost scored. We have to take that into account in the second leg.’
