Alexander Zverev was vying for his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open 2022. He had put on a scintillating performance at the tournament and was up against Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. In a closely-fought first set against Nadal, the German star lost the tiebreaker. Further, the second set panned out similarly to the first. However, as the second set went into the tiebreaker, Zverev suffered a horrific injury and subsequently lay on the court for a few minutes.

The 25-year-old was reduced to tears following that injury and was moved out of the court to receive preliminary treatment. Some time later, he entered the court on crutches to shake hands with Nadal and the umpire. As Zverev entered the court, he received a standing ovation from the crowd for his courageous display. Recently, Zverev has provided an update on his horrific injury.

Alexander Zverev starts mild training

The 2020 US Open finalist shared a video on Instagram to update his fans about his current injury status. Zverev could be seen walking without the help of crutches. Further, as he walked a few steps, Zverev gave a thumbs up with a smile, indicating some positive news for him ahead of his comeback.

Last month, Zverev confirmed that he had to undergo surgery to repair the damage done to his ligaments. Sharing this news, he said, “After further examination in Germany, we received confirmation that all three of the lateral ligaments in my right ankle were torn.”

Further, he added, “To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure all the ligaments heal properly, and to reclaim full stability in my ankle, surgery was the best choice.” 

Zverev reaches career-high ranking

In the aftermath of his heartbreaking French Open exit, Zverev reached his career-best ranking of Number 2 in the world. Djokovic fell in the ATP rankings after he failed to defend his French Open title. However, this helped Zverev attain the Number 2 spot.
