Victoria Azarenka has been one of the most consistent players on the women’s circuit over the last decade. A former World Number 1, she has managed to win two Grand Slam titles. However, things haven’t gone the way she would have liked this season.
Azarenka has failed to proceed beyond the quarterfinal rounds of the tournaments this season. Moreover, she had an emotional outburst during her third-round match at the Miami Open. Recently, the Belarusian tennis star has lifted lid on her condition at the Miami Open.
Victoria Azarenka talks about her mental-health issues
During an interaction with the NFL legend, Brandon Marshall, the former World Number 1 opened up about her emotional outburst at the Miami Open. She said, “There’s always going to be something you learn more about yourself and adaptive and you gotta adapt and I thought that I was strong enough right to go through it and I wasn’t ready.”
Further, she added, “I kept telling everybody I can’t, I don’t want to play like and I was hoping somebody was going to stop me right and nobody did and I was the most alone. I felt on the court. I’m looking and it’s a viral clip right now because I walked off the court.”
Talking about why she played that match, Azarenka said, “There’s this boy, his name is Luke. He’s one of the cutest kids, the most polite kid and he’s a really big fan of mine… I knew he was going to come to that match and I was like, do I just give up in that moment or not so I thought about everybody else. I mean you see, I’m going through it because I’m going to cry because it is real.”
Why did Azarenka retire midway through that match?
The Belarusian tennis star further revealed why she decided to quit the match following her emotional outburst. Azarenka said, “I have to go because I’ll either have a panic attack on the court or I don’t know what’s going to happen to me so I have to leave right and I left and I was to the point where you know, I was driving in my car and I was like I have to be safe enough to not hurt myself, you know that’s how powerful that moment was for me.”
