Even though it was slightly controversial towards the end, the second win of the season for Chase Elliott was decided by two factors that had a big say towards the end result. These were what NASCAR analyst Jeff Burton pointed out.
That moment was during the final restart when Elliott “had to clear” 23XI Racing driver, Kurt Busch.
Burton mentioned how it was Ryan Blaney who gave his pal a helping hand for the win.
“Here’s how Chase Elliott won the race. A big push by Blaney right there, that gives him some forward momentum,” Burton said. “Now he’s got to clear Kurt. He’s got a fast car, if he can clear Kurt, most likely race over, boom there it is!”
Along with what happened up front, Burton also analyzed how Kyle Busch’s one final push came to nothing.
“Kyle Busch…he is starting 12th right now on row 6. He’s got to make turn one work. The only way he’s gonna win this race is to drive into turn 1, make it four wide and front of him, they got four wide, and boom, it’s over. He got blocked,” he said.
“Where’s he gonna go? There’s absolutely nowhere for Kyle Busch to go.”
If not for one decision from Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott wouldn’t have won the race
In a post-race interview, Kurt Busch, who finished in second place, opened up on the one thing he regrets not doing, or not doing enough of during the pivotal moments of the race in the final restart.
That one thing was his willingness to race hard the eventual race winner, Chase Elliott.
Busch admitted that he went “soft” on the Hendrick Motorsports driver. “I should have been throwing some fenders and moving some momentum around. I didn’t stick with our strength,” he described.
The veteran driver was so caught up in what he could’ve done differently that he confessed he is still “zoned in” on the restart.
“I just wanted to throw some fenders and I didn’t get the job done. So I’m happy with second but my guys, everybody’s smiling but I let them down. I should’ve come up with a better plan,” Busch added.
