He recently wrapped filming on the upcoming Elvis biopic which sees him take on the role of the King of Rock and Roll.

While Austin’s voice didn’t seem particularly deeper than it had been in his 2016 movie Yoga Hosers, there did appear to be a slight change in accent.

Taking to Twitter, many fans admitted they hadn’t heard the 30-year-old actor speak in interviews before so had been taken aback by his deep accent, while others were left convinced he’d picked up a Southern drawl from playing the singer.

Shocked fans penned: ‘Yo this definitely was not Austin Butler’s voice pre-Elvis? Or am I tweaking’; ‘idk what i expected austin butler to sound like but that was definitely not it’; ‘ his voice had me’; ‘i’m still thinking about austin butler’s voice. goodnight.’

Austin began filming Elvis in 2020 although production was later halted due to the Covid pandemic.

The film chronicles the life and career of Elvis Presley, from his early days as a child to becoming a rock and roll and movie star, as well as his complex relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks).

The biopic also stars DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Dacre Montgomery as Steve Binder, who directed Elvis’ infamous 1968 comeback special and Luke Bracey as Jerry Schilling, a talent manager and member of the Memphis Mafia.

The cast also includes Kodi Smit-McPhee as country music legend Jimmie Rodgers, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as blues legend B.B. King and Richard Roxburgh as Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley.

In December, director Baz Luhrmann had nothing but praise for Austin as he weighed in on his portrayal of Presley for the first time.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, the 59-year-old said he was very impressed with Butler’s portrayal of the legendary singer and feels like his performance will put him on the map.

‘I’m not going to make Austin anything,’ he said when asked if the film would turn him into a mega star.

‘Austin is going to make himself a superstar, he is phenomenal in the movie. I don’t usually say anything about the performances in my movies but he is phenomenal.’

Explaining how he took on the role, Austin revealed: ‘I think I had a long time to study. We had about six months before I was cast just to play. I watched as much as I could, over and over and over.’

Elvis will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this month and is scheduled for a theatrical release in Australia on June 22 and in the United States on June 24.
