EastEnders has been snubbed in the soap category at the BAFTA TV Awards taking place next month.

The BBC show failed to get a nod despite strong storylines, including Gray Atkins’ murders which have drawn in viewers throughout the year, however Holby City – which aired its final episode this week – did get a nod.

Other notable snubs include an omission for Kate Garraway’s emotional documentary Caring For Derek.

Hollyoaks was also snubbed in the Soaps category – which has been running on Channel 4 since 1995. Holby City is up against Casualty, Coronation Street and Emmerdale in the category.

Comedian, presenter and star of The IT Crowd Richard Ayoade will host the Virgin Media Bafta TV Awards ceremony for the third consecutive year as it returns to London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 8.

Sadly for the BBC cast, this isn’t the first time that EastEnders has been left out of the running in recent years.

Exactly the same happened in 2020 when Casualty, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Holby City entered into fierce competition.

While Emmerdale was snubbed the following year in 2021 – just a year after they took home the gong.

It comes after Holby City fans were left devastated on Tuesday night as the Casualty spin-off came to a dramatic conclusion in the final episode after 23 years on the BBC

The medical drama finale focused on Jac Naylor, played by Rosie Marcel who has appeared in the show since 2005, after she awoke from a life-or-death operation led by Elliot Hope (Paul Bradley) and the team to remove her brain tumour.

Jac asked Adrian ‘Fletch’ Fletcher (Alex Walkinshaw) to write her a do-not-resuscitate order, despite Elliot telling the team that he wanted to do another operation.

Fletch said: ‘I just hate the thought of you giving up,’ as Jac replied: ‘Let me tell you about giving up. Letting this thing take control. Wipe out my mind. Leaving me delirious and doubly incontinent – that’s giving up.

‘I have never been clearer about anything in my life. Please do this one thing for me.’

Soon after, Jac suffered a stroke and was left braindead forcing Fletch to tell Elliot, Sacha Levy (Bob Barrett) and Max McGerry (Jo Martin) about the Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT).

And viewers were quick to take to social media, with many raging against the broadcasting giant.

One tweeted: ‘I know there’s bigger things going in in the world right now, yet for me, axing #Holby is the worst decision the BBC has ever made. Complete disregard for its customers & wider stakeholders. I’m guessing inner politics is at play. Ridiculous!’

Another commented: ‘I still cannot believe #HolbyCity was axed when viewing figures were so high & it’s fanbase so loyal. I’ve spent 23 years of my life watching & all involved are done a great disservice by the cancellation. They didn’t even get an extended episode to send it off!’

A third said: ‘@BBC can’t believe you spent £87 million on Albert Square #Eastenders a show dying in the ratings, but you killed off #HolbyCity that was well loved and had so many stories left to be told.’

Elsewhere in Wednesday’s BAFTA TV Award nominations, there was a notable snub for Kate Garraway’s documentary Caring for Derek.

GMB star Kate has made two moving documenatries over the past two years following her husband Derek’s battle with the ongoing effects of Covid.

Kate’s 2021 documentary Finding Derek won a BAFTA last year but her recent follow-up Caring for Derek, following the family’s adjustments after Derek returned home, failed to pick up a nod on Wednesday.

BBC favourite Line Of Duty also didn’t receive any nominations despite its popularity with viewers.

The sixth series finale, which aired in May 2021 was the most-watched episode of any drama (excluding soaps) since modern records began in 2002, with 12.8 million tuning in.

The show did receive three nominations at the Bafta TV Craft Awards in the categories for editing of a fictional programme, original music and sound on a fictional programme.

The second most viewed drama of the year, BBC1’s Vigil, did receive a nod in the Best Drama category but lead Suranne Jones was overlooked for a Leading Actress nomination.
