The Secrets Of Dumbledore sees Newt Scamander and the legendary wizard join forces to save the world from Grindewald, under the backdrop of 1930s Berlin.
Awarding the film three stars, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw praised the film as ‘good-natured magical entertainment’, though noted the film’s plot doesn’t shy away from making a political statement.
He said: ‘By invoking fascism and the approaching world war, the film is gesturing at something overwhelmingly evil, and yet by the end you might find the essentially non-committal storytelling style of franchise film-making, with its suspended resolutions, works against this.
‘It’s good-natured entertainment, though there is still something weightless and formless about the narrative.’

Writing for The Mirror, Andy Lea also offered note to Mads’ ‘less showy and more creepy’ portrayal of Grindewald.
He added: ‘Thankfully, while still nowhere near as enchanting as a trip to Hogwarts, the third Fantastic Beasts film brings some movie magic back to Rowling’s Wizarding World.’
‘Grindelwald remains a crushingly familiar villain (he’s basically Voldermort with a nose), but Mikklesen delivers a less showy and more creepy villain to Depp’s.
‘Sadly, there remains a Hogwarts-sized hole at the heart of this series. I suspect it was the Quidditch games, playground spats and the childish wonder of its young heroes that made the five Potter flicks so magical.’

Writing for The Evening Standard, Charlotte O’Sullivan awarded the film four stars, offering praise for Rowling’s ‘risky but rousing experiment,’ and Mads’ ‘welcome replacement’ of Johnny Depp in the film.
‘Secrets of Dumbledore shows an impressive willingness to mess with the HP formula (and formulas in general). It’s a work in progress and within a whisker of being fantastic,’ she wrote.
‘Note to Warners: don’t panic. There may be dark days ahead, in terms of box office receipts. But Rowling’s got this and should be allowed to see her wild experiment through to the end.’
