MASTERMIND fans were left enraged after an “unnecessary” change to the show’s format for the final on Monday night.
The eagerly anticipated final of the BBC quiz saw four contestants go head-to-head through various rounds this evening – but some aren’t happy about one fine detail.
The first round of the show is the contestant’s specialist subject – one they choose themselves and the show comes up with difficult and ultra-specific questions about it.
But the show’s usual format was shaken up for this series’ final – and fans have been left disappointed.
Viewers quickly took to Twitter to moan about the show’s switch up – which involves showing lengthy sections of information about each contestant’s journey and interests.
Alongside an emoji of an angry face, one person fumed: “Why mess with a good format? Stop with the biographies and just do the quiz. Not a format to be repeated next year.”
Echoing their comments, someone else vented: “All this fluff and stuff on each contestant is really spoiling it. The format works, stop messing with it.”
While a third added: “We don’t need the back story. It’s not The X Factor, we don’t need to know about their journey.”
The contestant introductions, however, were not the only source of complaint.
Multiple viewers questioned the fact that the finalists all seemed to have appeared on quiz shows before, from Pointless to Eggheads.
One viewer even suggested it feels as though it’s “the same people every time” on the show.
Despite some bad reviews, others were left applauding the series after a veteran quizzer became the oldest female Mastermind champion at the age of 67.
Alice Walker won by six points in the final – scoring a perfect 14 out of 14 in her specialist subject on the Peak District National Park.
The 67-year-old achieved the highest score of the whole series, finishing with a total of 33.
