THIS Is Going to Hurt viewers have been left horrified by a bloody caesarean scene which saw a doctor forced to deliver a baby three months early.
The new BBC drama stars Ben Whishaw as Adam, a junior doctor in obstetrics and gynaecology.
Based on the best-selling book by Adam Kay, the first episode saw Ben as Adam working a hard shift at the hospital before heading to his friend’s stag do.
But no sooner had he arrived he was called back to the hospital due to staff shortages, and soon found himself having to carry out an emergency C-section on a young woman called Erika.
Erika had been in the hospital earlier in the day but the staff believed she was being at best a hypochondriac and at worst a time waster, so Adam sent her home.
However, it turned out Erika, who is 25 weeks pregnant, was showing early signs of pre-eclampsia, which includes high blood pressure.
As she cried out in pain, an exhausted Adam realised he would have to do an emergency C-section and this lead to a graphic and bloodied scene in the hospital theatre.
The camera didn’t shift its focus as Adam cut open Erika’s stomach and pulled the tiny baby out, with the unconscious mother losing pints of blood.

As Adam started to panic, he admitted he couldn’t see what he needed to because of all the blood.
It was then that his boss arrived to take control of the situation, and battled to save Erika as Adam looked shell-shocked.
Viewers at home were also floored by the realistic surgery scenes, and took to Twitter to comment.
One wrote: “Is everyone watching This Is Going To Hurt through their fingers?”
Another added: “This is so incredibly stressful.”
A third tweeted: “Graphically bloody. Pacy. Faithful adaptation.”
This Is Going to Hurt is available on BBC iPlayer.
