Velshi, raised in Toronto, Ontario, graduated from Queen’s University with a degree in religious studies.
One of his earliest television experiences was with Bloomberg Canada for a segment titled The Business News.
In 2001, Velshi relocated to New York City to cover business for CNN. Between his tenures at CNN and MSNBC, he briefly reported for Al Jazeera America.
He was the first on-air talent to be hired by the channel, which eventually shut down in 2016.
That year same year, Velshi joined MSNBC. Since then, he has co-anchored with Stephanie Ruhle and frequently fills in for Lawrence O’Donnell. His current show, Velshi, airs on weekends at 8am ET.

Although their careers are anchored in New York, they split time between their city apartment and a home in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
