Matt Stonie was conspicuously absent from the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest yesterday, causing some to wonder why didn’t compete.

He is the number four ranked competitive eater in Major League Eating, and managed to put away 46 hot dogs during his last attempt.

In 2019, he finished in fourth place. The last – and only – time he won the Nathan’s contest was in 2015, with a total of 62 hot dogs.

But that doesn’t explain his absence yesterday. Given that it’s less than a year since he quaffed a 20,000 calorie burger in just over four minutes, it’s only natural to wonder why he didn’t compete in the 2022 edition of Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Fans are wondering why Matt Stonie didn’t compete in the 2022 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

Matt Stonie (full name: Matthew Kai Stonie) is the only person to have beaten Joey Chestnut at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest since he took competitive eating by force in 2007.

Before Chestnut, there was Kobayashi, who won every year from 2000 to 2006, and revolutionised the sport.

Joey Chestnut has won the contest every year since 2007, except in 2015 when Matt Stonie bested him. Matt first entered the competition in 2011, when he tied for fifth place.

He returned in 2016, and again for the following three years’ bouts. For obvious reasons, the event didn’t take place in 2020, and restrictions on travel because of covid-19 stopped him from being able to enter in 2021, too. But where was he this year?

Where was Matt Stonie this year – why did he not compete?

Two days ago – the day before the July the Fourth hot dog eating contest – Matt Stonie uploaded a video to his Instagram followers of him eating several marshmallows.

Behind him popular DJ Marshmello, or someone that looks like him, looms tall. “Noot noot”, reads Stonie’s caption. The video has received 11,580 likes, at time of writing.

Several of his fans commented on the video, telling Matt they missed him during yesterday’s competition. “Joey had no real competition”, one wrote. “You need to get back in the game”, another.

A day before that, he posted a video to his YouTube channel in which he delivers a giant marshmallow to… Marshmello.

Matt watched the contest from his living room

Per a series of Instagram stories Matt Stonie posted yesterday, the reason he didn’t compete in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest yesterday was because he was at home – watching it on TV.

“He looks ready, man”, he says during the video, looking at Joey Chestnut. “I might need to update my list.”

Stonie predicted that Joey would consume a total of 61 hot dogs during the contest. His estimates for Chestnut’s rivals Esper, Pat and Webb were 56, 46 and 42 respectively.

That means Chestnut outperformed Matt’s estimate by two hot dogs; he thought Esper would eat 13 more hot dogs than he did; and Webb ate four fewer than Matt Stonie’s estimate.

What has Matt Stonie been up to this year in terms of competitive eating?

Matt uploads videos to his Megatoad YouTube channel regularly. The majority feature eating challenges, whether or not they’re earnest attempts to break world records.

Some recent examples include eating a 2,000,000 Scoville unit chicken tender – which really made him sweat; consuming 200 hot tamale (fierce cinnamon) flavoured peeps; and knocking back six pounds of pasta.

Last year, on 25 April, he ate 28.5 24oz servings of popcorn in eight minutes, in Las Vegas. And three months later, on 26 July 2021, he ate a 20,000 calorie burger in 4:10, at Vegas’ Heart Attack Grill.

In other words, he’s been busy enough. He’s not out of the game. He just hasn’t taken part in the annual hot dog eating contest for a couple of years.
