Laurie Cumbo gets engaged at the Met Gala

The 2022 Met Gala will forever be a special date for Laurie Combo and Bobby Digi Olisa.

The NYC Culture Commissioner’s longtime partner popped the question in front of attendees while celebrity interviews were taking place on Monday.

Bobby got down on one knee on the iconic stairs and opened a box with an engagement ring as Laurie covered her face in surprise. The crowd and photographers started shouting “say yes” moments later. She said yes shortly after.

It turns out that the Met Gala holds a special meaning to Laurie for another reason. Speaking to ET Online, she said: “I was an intern here when I was 15 and came to the Met Gala. Now I’m coming back with my now husband [to-be] as the Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs. [It’s a] full-circle moment.”

Who is Bobby Digi Olisa?

Bobby Digi Olisa is an executive director at Canvas Institute. According to his bio, he founded the organisation and Island Voice to advocate for underserved communities on the North Shore of Staten Island where he was raised.

Bobby was born in Brooklyn and moved to Nigeria where he attended high school. He returned to the US and studied at City College of Staten Island. He holds an honorary degree from Columbia University in Not-for-Profit Management.

He is the founding member of the childhood learning initiative called Equity Alliance of Staten Island (EASI) Aspiration.

“Its goal is to attain equity and equality in the Staten Island education system, particularly in early childhood education in the short term and the overall development of Staten Island’s underserved communities in the long term, with a deep interest in dismantling the system and systemic injustices along the way,” his bio states.

Bobby and Laurie discuss romantic proposal

Bobby and Laurie opened up about the romantic proposal while talking to reporters at the 2022 Met Gala.

“You know, it’s always like trying to wait for the right time. So when is the right time considering everything that’s going on worldwide? So I was just like, ‘Today we’re going to make it happen,’” Bobby told The Associated Press.

“You wait for this moment your whole life almost and for it to be right here, it was everything that I thought it would be,” Laurie added in the same interview.
