French actor Gaspard Ulliel has died following a ski accident in the Alps.
Ulliel was reportedly skiing in the Savoie region when he collided with another skier on Tuesday, resulting in a serious brain trauma. According to the AFP, an investigation into the accident has been opened.
Mountain police in the area are said to have responded to multiple accidents recently due to hard snow and ice on the slopes.
Ulliel is set to appear in Marvel’s upcoming Moon Knight series, which stars Oscar Isaac as the titular superhero and Ethan Hawke. Ulliel plays Midnight Man/Anton Mogart, one of Moon Knight’s enemies in the comics. It’s unclear at this stage whether that’s the incarnation Ulliel plays in the series.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our friend and colleague Gaspard Ulliel. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement, via THR.
As well has his upcoming appearance in the Disney Plus series, set to premiere in March, Ulliel has a long career in film, both in France and beyond.
He has previously starred in the likes of Hannibal Rising, in which he played Hannibal Lecter, Saint Laurent, in which he played the titular fashion designer, and A Very Long Engagement. The latter, in which he co-starred alongside Amelie actress Audrey Tautou, earned him his first César Award in 2004 for Most Promising Actor.
The second came after It’s Only the End of the World in 2017, when he won the Best Actor category.
Following a successful career in France, a starring role as Henri, Duke of Guise in Bertrand Tavernier’s La Princesse de Montpensier led to international recognition.
Ulliel went on to become the face of Chanel fragrance Bleu de Chanel, starring in a commercial for the brand directed by Martin Scorsese, and Longchamp.
Ulliel is survived by his 6-year-old son Orso and his girlfriend, model and singer Gaelle Pietri.
