A MAN has died in hospital after he was allegedly given a lethal dose of another patient’s medication.

Martin Weldon, 35, was rushed to the city’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow after he suffered a diabetic hypoglycemia.

But he tragically passed away on Saturday[/caption]

This was caused by his blood sugar level dropping too low, and resulted in many complications, including a severe brain injury.

He was put in intensive care for treatment where doctors told his devastated family twice that his machines might need to have been switched off.

But Martin, from Dumbarton, defied the odds and proved medics wrong by slowly making progress after four months of treatment.

But his family said he “still had a long way to go” and had to learn basic life skills again such as talking and walking.

Posting on a fundraiser page to raise money for Brain Injury Matters and awareness for diabetes, his sister Keeleigh said: “This has been a worst nightmare for not only the family but for Martin.”

But, according to STV News, Martin passed away on Saturday when he was allegedly given medication in an error.

His heartbroken family posted a tribute to him on social media which said the error was caused by “staff negligence”.

Posting on Facebook, they wrote: “Today we lost my son Martin, after making progress in hospital he passed away due to staff negligence.

“I would like to take the time to thank his real friends and family who have been there for martin in the past few months.

“Funeral arrangements will follow, thanks. Myself and family would appreciate time to grieve for now.”

An investigation has now been launched by Police Scotland into Martin’s death after NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) notified the Procurator Fiscal.

In a statement, Martin’s family told STV News: “Our family is taking time to grieve for Martin and we are supporting the police through the investigation and once the investigation is done we will comment further.”

NHSGGC told the Scottish Sun their “deepest condolences” are with Martin’s family, but added that they couldn’t comment on an ogoing investigation.

A spokesperson for NHSGGC said: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mr Weldon’s family and loved ones as they mourn his loss.

“After immediately notifying the Procurator Fiscal, the circumstances around Mr Weldon’s death are now subject to an ongoing police investigation.

“As such, it would be inappropriate to comment further.

“We continue to work with relevant authorities and remain committed to engaging with the family as investigations progress.”

Officers confirmed to the Scottish Sun that enquiries are ongoing and his death is being treated as “unexplained”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Saturday, 13 August, police were made aware of the unexpected death of a 35-year-old man at the QEUH.

“The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.”
