The FedEx Cup playoff starts this weekend. The first of the three-part contest will be held at TPC Southwind in Memphis starting on August 11. Top 125 ‘eligible’ players in the Tour will go head-to-head in the first week at the St. Jude Championship. The top 70 from this set of players will move on to the BMW Championship, while the final Top 30 will battle at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta to be crowned the winner of the FedEx Cup.

Total Purse at this year’s FedEx Cup

The tournament witnesses the strongest contingent on the Tour as a consequence of the highest purse offered across the whole season. The total purse at this year’s St. Jude championship is a mouth-watering $15 million. While the figure is still shallow as compared to LIV golf tournaments, the contingent makes the viewing highly exciting. World No.1, Scottie Scheffler, who has had a tremendous season, will be among the favorites to lift the Cup. Open Championship winner Cameron Smith, who is rumored to have accepted a contract with LIV Golf, will also be in action.

Winner’s share and other benefits

The winner of the competition will receive a winner’s share like never before. $2.7 million will be on offer for the winner, along with a two-plus season exemption on the PGA Tour, the 2023 Masters, and the 2023 PGA Championship. The winner will also receive an entry for next year’s Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The confusion behind who won the event in 2021

Tony Finau will be defending his crown at the TPC Southwind, but at a course he has never won on. This is because last year, the first event of the post-season playoff was contested as the Northern Trust title. TPC Southwind hosted the 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, in which LIV rebel golfer, Abraham Ancer, emerged victorious. While the latter won’t be a part of the contingent owing to his commitments with LIV, Finau will be hoping to capture his first win at Memphis. “Yeah, it’s definitely strange defending on a golf course that I haven’t won on. Usually, when you defend a tournament it’s on the same course, so it’s a little different. Technically speaking, I am the defending champion,” Finau said.
