Joe Root and England will be looking to take more Australia scalps early on day two after an encouraging opening day of the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney.

James Anderson and Mark Wood removed Marcus Harris and Marnus Labuschagne respectively before one of many rain showers on the first day brought play to a premature end, with the hosts on 126 for three.

Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja – playing his first Test since 2019 – will resume the innings for Australia, who are aiming for a whitewash after taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series with wins in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.
