The most celebrated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps holds the record for winning the most number of gold medals in the event’s history. His accomplishments in swimming are well-known, but not many know about his love for Call of Duty!

Phelps was born on 30 June 1985. He turns 37 today, and as fans pay tribute to his extensively eventful career, his love for Call of Duty is intriguing enough to be in the limelight. This article is a throwback to the time when the Baltimorean athlete confessed his obsession to the popular FPS franchise.

Michael Phelps once played a lot of Call of Duty

In an interview with Post Game back in 2012, Phelps revealed his attraction to Call of Duty. “I’ve been playing a lot of Call of Duty lately. I find myself playing like 30 hours a week.” Answering a follow-up query, the pro-athlete also shed light on how he used to ‘get crushed’ and in turn, trash talk as well.

“I always find myself getting heated, trash talking. And you know it’s a 10-year-old kid on the other line that just demolished me. It’s so frustrating. But it is fun, and I’m very competitive in everything I do.”

In a Facebook Live session from May 2016, Michael Phelps revealed the number of Call of Duty games he played since he came down to Colorado Springs for his training ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics. “I’ve logged almost, like, 450 games, 500 games since I’ve been here in the last, like, two weeks.” Only true fans can go that far!

No fan would expect Michael Phelps, an accomplished Olympian, to be such an avid fan of a shooter game like Call of Duty. He has won 28 Olympic Medals from 5 events, from 2000’s Summer Olympics in Sydney to 2016’s Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, he picked up his last 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal to add to his massive collection.

He retired for the second time after Rio’s Olympics, the first time being after 2012’s London Olympics. Phelps is indeed the most accomplished athlete, not only in his sport but also among all other Olympians to date.

Being a franchise of tactical FPS, Call of Duty houses immense competition. And, Phelps seems to like that aspect of the game. As he mentions, he is extremely competitive in everything he does!
