Stefanos Tsitsipas has had a fairly inconsistent run at the tournaments this season. From winning the Monte Carlo Masters to a third-round exit at Wimbledon, the Greek star has seen it all. Recently, he had another disappointing result. Tsitsipas has bowed out of the 2022 US Open after losing against Daniel Elahi Galan of Columbia in the first round.

In the absence of Novak Djokovic, Tsitsipas was expected to dig deep in the tournament. However, he has suffered an unexpected loss at the hands of a qualifier.

What went wrong for Stefanos Tsitsipas?

The fourth was on the back foot right from the word go. His Columbian opponent dominated the first set as he inflicted a bagel on Tsitsipas.

Further, the second set panned out similarly to the first. Tsitsipas could manage to win only a solitary game in the second set as Galan took a two-set lead by winning the second set 6-1.

However, Tsitsipas showed glimpses of a comeback by winning the third set 6-3. But it was all over for the Greek star as he lost the fourth set 7-5 to bow out of the US Open.

What next for Tsitsipas and Galan?

Owing to his opening round defeat, the fourth seed Tsitsipas will lose some crucial points on the ATP rankings chart. Last year, he reached the third round before losing out to Carlos Alcaraz. It was a completely unexpected loss for Tsitsipas who will be disappointed not to make it to the further stages of the last Grand Slam tournament of the season.

Meanwhile, Galan, who entered the main draw through the qualifying rounds, will take on Jordan Thompson of Australia. The latter had earlier defeated Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in a five-setter thriller. Tsitsipas will hope to come back strongly in the upcoming tournaments. On the other hand, Galan will look to maintain his giant-killing run at the US Open as he takes on Thompson next.
