Mick Schumacher has been making the most of his downtime in Australia ahead of his debut at the 2022 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The 23-year-old race car driver enjoyed a surf with a friend on Tuesday. 

Mick was the spitting image of his legendary race car driver father, Michael Schumacher, as he navigated the waves.

He wore a black wetsuit and appeared laser-focused as he maintained his balance on the surfboard.

At one stage, he wiped out, and despite falling backwards off his board, managed to laugh it off as he toppled into the water.

He smiled throughout his surf session, happily chatting with his friend as they emerged from the water with their boards tucked under their arms.

Mick is set to compete in the Australian leg of the Formula 1, which commences in Melbourne from April 8 until April 10. 

In an interview with Eyewitness News on Thursday, he spoke about driving in his first Australian Grand Prix and following in his father’s footsteps.

‘I’m quite excited, I’m looking forward to getting to know the track and getting to know the city as well,’ he said.

‘I’ve been here with my dad and have watched him race in Melbourne, that was really cool, and I’m excited to drive here myself and make my own experiences of driving in Formula 1 in Australia.’

It comes just weeks after Mick was involved in a horrific car crash in the Saudi Arabia Formula 1 Grand Prix. 

Despite being airlifted to hospital after the 270kph crash, Mick emerged unhurt from the accident.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, Mick said he was ‘feeling alright’ after the accident and was looking forward to the Australian race.

He was on a ski holiday with a then-14-year-old Mick when he fell and hit his head on a rock, with doctors saying his helmet ultimately saved his life.
