MANY viewers of The Tourist were gripped by the Jamie Dornan led drama, but some could not get past a glaring ‘plot hole’.

Leading actor Jamie plays a Northern Irish man who finds himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, being pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road.

An epic cat and mouse chase unfolds and the man later wakes in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive. Except he has no idea who he is.

With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback.

At its heart however, is a story of self-discovery with a ticking timebomb underneath: as The Man starts to uncover the mystery of who he was, he’s also forced to ask who he is now – and fast.

But one thing The Man seems to know about himself is that he can’t drive a stick shift car.

Towards the end of the third episode which aired Sunday night on the BBC, The Man attempts to carjack Probationary Constable Helen Chambers’ car.

Holding her at gunpoint, she reluctantly throws over her keys and he gets in the car briefly before swearing loudly.

“I’m going to need you to drive,” he bashfully says to Helen, who cries “why?” in response.

The Man hesitates: “I don’t think… I don’t think I can drive a stick.”

But viewers watching at home did not believe a person from Northern Ireland would not be able to drive a manual car.

“[The] head injury was an unbelievable part of the plot. Tell you what’s more unbelievable – the character from Northern Ireland who can’t drive a car with a manual transmission. Looking forward to that backstory,” pointed out on viewer on Twitter.

Another added: “Loving #TheTourist@BBCOne Violent but funny and gripping. But a bloke from Northern Ireland who can’t drive a stick shift car? Nope.”

And a third wrote: “Why would someone from Northern Ireland not know how to drive a stick? #TheTourist.”

In the UK, about 90 per cent of driving tests are still passed in manual cars, automatic cars are on the rise with 40 per cent of new cars on the road being automatics, according to insurer, Marmalade.

The six-part series started on BBC1 on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at 9pm and will air ever Sunday with all episodes now available on BBC iPlayer.

In the US the series is set to air on HBO Max, but there is no release date yet.
