The Material Girl singer was seen sporting a pair of teeth grillz as she joined The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday.
Grillz are a type of removable dental jewelry that is worn over the front of your teeth.
The decorative dental covers can vary in design as some may cover just one or two teeth, while others may cover the top or bottom row of teeth.
The jewelry pieces are often made from silver or gold, with some opting to jazz up their sets with jewels or diamonds.
Madonna’s Tonight Show grillz are custom for her 64th birthday
Before Madonna and Jimmy Fallon reflected on her musical legacy, the singer addressed the fact she was wearing grillz as she asked the talk show host to tell her if she started talking with a lisp.
In the moment, she revealed they were custom made for her birthday, which is next week (August 16) when she will turn 64.
She explained she designed them herself and added: “They’re my birthday grillz. It’s almost my birthday, so I got myself a pair of grillz.”
Later in the interview, she discussed how she had worn the dental accessory for decades as she opened up on why she chooses to wear them. The singer said: “I just like the way it looks. Its mouth jewelry, and I have really ugly teeth.”
The pop icon’s love of grilz spans almost a decade
According to The Sun, Madonna first began to don the dental accessory almost a decade ago in 2013.
That year, the Holiday hitmaker wore a set of gold diamond plated grillz on the cover of Harper’s BAZAAR‘s August issue.
The singer hinted at the dental accessories feature on her Instagram months before her cover as she shared a couple of up-close shots of her teeth with her followers.
Around the same time, Madonna also wore a set of gold grillz which outlined her teeth while attending an event in Rome.
The following year the singer attended the Grammys alongside her then 8-year-old son David while also sporting the mouth bling.
Her love of grillz has since continued over the years as she now often shows off her collection of dental accessories on her Instagram feed.
