On Tuesday, July 12, co-founder of Meow Wolf Matt King passed away at the age of 37. In memory of the artist and in recognition of his contributions to the art world, the company shared a post.
The tragic passing of Meow Wolf co-founder, artist, and closest friend Matt King has left the community in shock and utter devastation. We send our condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him.
Matt King founded Meow Wolf in 2008 in collaboration with six other artists
Meow Wolf is a public benefit corporation that Matt King formed with the intention of promoting “systemic social change and well-being through the arts.” Along with Sean Di Ianni, Corvas Brinkerhoff, Emily Montoya, Caity Kennedy, Benji Geary, and Vince Kadlubek, he formed it. He has participated in 34 community installations.
“What we want is for people to leave and wonder what is genuine. What can I actually do to affect the world in a positive way given who I am and what I am? No, we don’t have a bleak outlook. We don’t want gloomy predictions.
Meow Wolf’s first location was The House of Eternal Return in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Following its enormous popularity, additional displays debuted in Denver and Las Vegas.
It places a focus on local artists’ work and was founded on “artist collaboration.” “Artists and storytelling from underrepresented and underprivileged populations” are the group’s main interests.
The Meow Wolf community honors the artist on social media
The official Meow Wolf website posted a tribute in memory of the founder. It lauded King for his ground-breaking efforts that contributed to the community’s current state.
Even before people were aware of the idea of immersive art, King played a significant role in the community and helped develop its first immersive art exhibition.
He continued by saying that the tributes coming in from King’s admirers and followers show how influential he is in the Meow Wolf community.
