A RAPIST beat up and trapped a vulnerable woman in an “utterly appalling campaign of violence”.
Michael Maughan, 27, struck his victim, in her early 20s, with a chair and threw cough syrup at her on one occasion before threatening to take her to Epping Forest to kill her.

He then raped her several times. She was terrified of the repercussions if she said she did not consent to sex.
The pair had been staying in hotels across Chiswick and Hammersmith, West London, at the time in April 2021.
Maughan also slapped her, beat her, threw her to the floor, took her car keys and banned her from leaving during the violent campaign.
She told a friend when she feared for her life and alerted the police.

But Maughan then tried to hunt her down and barged into a beauty salon she often visited, verbally abusing and threatening staff.
One worker quit for good because she was terrified he would return.
Police arrested him in Haringey, North London, in May 2021 and found his victim being held against her will and extremely distressed.
He admitted controlling/ coercive behaviour, rape, sexual assault, actual bodily harm and kidnap and false imprisonment.

He was jailed for 18-and-a-half years at Wood Green crown court.
Justice Kalyani Kaul QC said Maughan was dangerous, particularly regarding sexual relationships with women.
She added it was a “campaign of the most appalling treatment many in this court may have seen.”
Met Police Detective Superintendent Sharon Brookes said: “It cannot be underestimated just how dangerous an offender Maughan is.

“What he put the young victim through is utterly appalling – it is something no person should ever have to endure.
“I hope she can, in time, move on to the next chapter of her life, safe in the knowledge that Maughan will spend a considerable amount of time behind bars.”
