In April 2014, “Days of Our Lives” made history when they aired the wedding of Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis. The storyline marked the very first gay marriage between two men to be shown on a soap opera, per Los Angeles Times. The couple’s wedding plans came together very quickly, as fans watched the pair walk down the aisle at a ceremony held in the main room at the Kiriakis mansion just two months after the men became engaged.
The grooms both wore black tuxedos and were given away by their mother’s Adrienne Kiriakis (Judi Evans) and Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney). The ceremony was sweetly officiated by Will’s grandmother, Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall).
“So honored to be part of history right now. Thanks to the LGBT community for inspiring me with your courage and your strength everyday,” actor Freddie Smith (ex-Sonny) said on Twitter at the time.
While “DOOL” made history by airing the first-ever first gay marriage of two men, “All My Children” aired the first same-sex marriage between two females when Eden and Tamara tied the knot in matching gowns back in 2009.
