PRODUCERS of Matilda the Musical have written out its Russian characters because of Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

The Russian gangsters, comedy characters who see to it that Matilda’s evil dad gets his comeuppance, have been replaced by Bulgarians.

Four actresses rehearsing the lead role have also learned her Russian-spoken lines in Bulgarian for the hit, which has played for 12 years in London’s West End.

Some of the jokes remain, such as when the mob mistake the “da” in Matilda for the Russian “yes”.

A spokesman said: “In February we recognised that the current conflict in Ukraine added an unanticipated dimension to part of the original storyline.

“In response we made some small modifications.

“These included translating one of Matilda’s speeches from the final scene into Bulgarian (rather than Russian).

“The four actors rehearsing the role of Matilda learned the Bulgarian lines.”

The musical, with its hits Revolting Children and Naughty, was composed by musician-comedian Tim Minchin.

It is based on the Roald Dahl book and plays at the Cambridge Theatre.
