According to The Geneva Conventions, mercenaries are not recognized as legitimate combatants and are not necessarily granted the same legal protections as they would be if they were a member of a regular army.

The Geneva Conventions is a collection of four treaties, compromising of the international legal standards for humanitarian treatment during war.

Within The Geneva Conventions lay out the basic rights for wartime prisoners; the established protections for the wounded and sick; and provided protections for civilians in and around a war-zone.
