A YOUNG soldier who died at an Army base was found hanged, an inquest heard.

Sophie Madden, 23, was discovered at the Overhill Training Centre at St Martin’s Plain Camp near Folkestone on June 10.

Tragically she couldn’t be saved and was declared dead at the scene.

An inquest into her death heard how the Gunner’s cause of death was given as “suspension”, Kent Online reports.

Assistant coroner Bina Patel said: “The circumstances surrounding her death were that she was found hanging at Overhill Training Centre, St Martin’s Plain Camp in Kent, on June 10 and died from injuries sustained at the scene.”

Kent Police launched a probe into the tragedy but confirmed Sophie’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

Tributes flooded in for the soldier, who was based at Albemarle Barracks in Northumberland.

The 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery said: “Gunner Madden was a highly valued member of D Battery RHA.

“Her resilience and professionalism were an example to us all, and will live on as her legacy here and across the Gunner family.

“Our thoughts are with her family and ask that they are given space at this difficult time.”

While a pal said: “Your smile and your laugh lit up any room without fail, so many memories I will cherish forever.

“Rest easy beautiful girl. You are missed and loved beyond words.”

The Ministry of Defence confirmed an investigation had been launched.

A full inquest was adjourned until September 5.
