England have had a 12 months of cricket to forget from an Ashes annihilation to being crushed in the Caribbean.

They recently slumped to a 10-wicket defeat in the third Test in Grenada as their winless run stretched to nine Tests.

Despite the defeat, captain Joe Root reiterated his desire to lead England moving forward.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at the events England have slumped to losses in.

March 2021

Spun out in the subcontinent

England lose in less than two days in Ahmedabad, getting bowled out for 112 and 81 by India. With just 842 balls bowled, it is the shortest completed Test match since 1935. They eventually slide to a 3-1 series defeat with Ravi Ashwin and Axar Patel claiming 59 wickets between them.

June 2021

Historic home series defeat

ENGLAND play safe and defend their way to a draw, instead of attempting to chase 273 in 75 overs against New Zealand in the first Test of the summer. At Edgbaston, England collapse and are bowled out for 122 as the eventual World Test champions inflict a first Test series defeat at home for Joe Root as captain and England’s first since 2014.

August 2021

Outgunned by India

England capitulate on the final day at Lord’s against India as they are dismissed for 120. Another day-five collapse at the Oval sees India take a 2-1 series lead and ensures that it will be the first time since 2001 where England will finish a home summer without a Test series win.

December 2021

Ashes annihilation

England lose the Ashes in Australia in 12 days either side of Christmas, longer than the 14 days they spend in quarantine. On debut, Scott Boland takes six wickets for seven runs as England are bowled out for 68 at the MCG — their lowest score in Australia since 1904.

January 2022

Humiliation in Hobart

England avoid a whitewash as James Anderson and Stuart Broad hold out for the final wicket and survive in Sydney but another horror show in Hobart puts the final nail in the coffin. England lose all 10 wickets for 56 runs in 22.5 overs on the third day.

March 2022

Crushed in the Caribbean

England drop Broad and Anderson and a combined 1,177 Test wickets between them for the West Indies tour. Despite optimistic showings in Antigua and Barbados, another catastrophic collapse in Grenada ensures that for the 10th series out of 11 in the Caribbean since 1968, England leave empty-handed.
