The Golden State Warriors are coming off an absolute high this season. After 2 years in the nid, the Bay won their fourth title in eight seasons. Their drafted trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green etched their name in the Warriors’ history books. However, the trio may not be a unit next season. As it stands, the defending champions aren’t willing to give Green the contract he wants.

When the name of GSW pops up, the attention immediately turns to Stephen Curry. The Baby Face Assassin has been the face of the franchise for the longest time. However, while Green’s numbers won’t blow fans away, his impact is much more. The 2017 Defensive Player of The Year is the headmaster for the Warriors. A leader who stands up and gives his team the necessary motivation. Hence, he has been a key piece for the Bay.

However, the team that loves him is not willing to give him a max extension. Likewise, Green is open to exploring the market.

Is Stephen Curry set to lose his pick and roll partner?

The 2022 NBA finals showcased the depth the Warriors hold as a team. Young players stepped up to the challenge and flourished. Stephen Curry created his own history by winning his first-ever Finals MVP. However, despite being on stage 6 times, Green fell apart. He averaged 6 points and 6 assists while turning the ball over nearly 3 times and shooting 33% from the field.

Likewise, age is catching up to the Warriors’ forward. And the organization is aware of it. Hence, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Warriors are not planning on giving Draymond a max contract. This left the fans in a world of shock.

Green is currently all set to make $25.8 million in the coming season. Furthermore, the former All-Star has a player option worth $28 million. But Green wants every penny he deserves. Likewise, the Warriors forward is looking to sign a max extension and get 120% of his salary. That would guarantee Green $164 million through the next five seasons. But the Warriors have their work cut out for them. So why is it difficult for them to offer one of their important players the extension he wants?

Why the Warriors may have to let Green go

The Bay just won an NBA championship with the highest payroll. They paid a hefty $170 million in luxury tax alone. Having four top stars waiting for an extension has put the Warriors in serious trouble.

Right now, youngsters in Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole will both be eyeing a much-deserved contract extension. Their postseason heroics and longevity are the main factors that hamper Draymond’s wish. If they do give him the extension, Green will be 37 by the final year of the contract. As for both Wiggins and Poole, they are still reaching their prime.

Having drafted 3 top guys has hit the Warriors in a way they didn’t see coming. Even owner Joe Lacob feels the NBA’s luxury tax policy hits them unfairly. However, the Warriors will have to make the big decision before August 3rd. Do you think Green will get the extension? Let us know your views in the comments below.
