Newcastle United star Joelinton endured a premature end to his season after being carried off on a stretcher at Burnley.

Eddie Howe‘s side took on Burnley at Turf Moor on the final day of the season aiming for a top-half finish, and they got exactly that when Callum Wilson‘s brace earned them a 2-1 victory.

Though after a promising start to the game, things quickly turned sour for the Magpies when Joelinton went down after a clash with a Burnley player.

The accidental clash of heads occurred in the sixth-minute of the game and whilst his opponent escaped without injury, the Brazilian was not so lucky.

Medics were quick to attend to him, providing on-field treatment for several minutes before a stretcher was called.

Newcastle opted to substitute the fan-favourite and replaced him with Jacob Murphy.

Joelinton has become a revelation on Tyneside this season after a difficult start to his time at the club.

He signed from German club Hoffenheim in 2019 for £40 million and initially played as a striker.

Joelinton struggled to find the net regularly and came in for a barrage of criticism for his poor goal return.

But a new role in midfield this term has led to him being named as the club’s Player of the Season, after a number of sparkling performances.

He said after receiving his gong: ‘I have simply went game to game and tried to give my all. I just want to help the team.

‘I am very pleased to win the player of the year award.

‘Thank you to the fans, the players and the staff for helping me, and all my family and friends. Thank you.

‘It has been a great season for me. Many things have happened, but I’m very happy to help the team and help the team stay in the Premier League. Hopefully next season will be even better.’
