VIEWERS were caught by surprise when soap bosses made a few changes in Monday’s EastEnders instalment.
The long-running program is known to add in scenes that mention events happening off-screen.
As each episode of the BBC One drama are filmed months in advance, last-minute scenes take producers a great deal of effort to rescript, film and add into episodes which are already finished.
However, EastEnders writers went the extra mile after last night’s trip to Albert Square with two references that left viewers stunned but delighted.
There was first a sporting reference during a scene between Frankie Lewis and Callum Highway, as Mick Carter’s daughter suggested the police office was feeling down due to Mark Noble retiring after 18 years with West Ham.
But when this was revealed as unrelated to Callum’s state of mind, Frankie paid tribute to Eurovision contestant Sam Ryder.
The singer came second in the contest with his song Space Man, which was playing in the background of last night’s scene.
Frankie then mentioned that Ukrainian band, Kalush Orchestra, deserved their win.
Soap fans swarmed over to Twitter, surprised to see how quickly bosses managed to add in the references.
“Love the dialogue about Eurovision with the song in background. It’s great when EE fits current events in”, one viewer penned.

Another commented: “can’t believe they recorded a scene about Eurovision in the last few days.”
“I love it when EE add in little scenes like this”, a third chimed in.
Callum eventually opened up about his husband Ben Mitchell and their ongoing issues.
EastEnders viewers may remember Callum caught his other half kissing Prince Albert manager Lewis Butler.
The scene left fans fuming and the policeman has since lamented over the fallout.
During last night’s episode, Callum reminded Frankie that he never used to watch the Eurovision contest before Ben.
He then added that, the one night they don’t watch it together, the UK does well.
Meanwhile, Frankie tried to reassure Callum, telling him that his fallout with Ben will undoubtedly be sorted – but he isn’t sure whether he can forgive his husband.
But soon enough, the pair made up although Callum warned Ben that he was walking on eggshells.
Sadly, more trouble and dark times are looming on the horizon for the couple…
EastEnders airs from Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
