Steve Kerr has achieved almost everything there is to win in the NBA. He has multiple NBA titles to his name, both as a coach and as a player. Most recently, he coached Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors to their fourth NBA title in 8 years.
Interestingly enough, all this could’ve changed in one major decision in 2014. Kerr was faced with the task to choose between the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors.
He chose the Warriors and changed the course of the NBA forever. In an interview, Kerr looked back upon his decision and also revealed why the Knicks would have fired him.
Kerr said, “We’re all dependent on our talent as coaches, and the Warriors were already good. They were a 51 team, they got all this young talent. So, honestly, if I had taken the Knicks job, I would have been spun through that cycle and be gone in two years, guaranteed.”
Interestingly enough, when Kerr was offered the Knicks job, it was Phil Jackson who was president of the franchise. Jackson was Kerr’s coach during the latter’s time in the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan.
Steve Kerr leads the Warriors and Stephen Curry to a historic title win
The Golden State Warriors led by Stephen Curry entered the season with a point to prove. Despite having a good team, the team failed due to injuries and other issues.
However, this was not the case for the 2021-22 season. Although Curry was sidelined with an injury, the team held onto their own and booked their place in the playoffs.
After dominating the Western Conference playoffs, the Warriors faced off against the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals. Stephen Curry played an important role as he averaged 31.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists.
The Warriors made a brilliant comeback to win the NBA title 4-2. With this win, Steve Kerr won his 4th NBA title as a coach and has 5 as a player, which makes him one of the most iconic faces in the NBA.
